Ever Heard Of Maca?

Hello hello, welcome to Bliss And Bubbly and happy Wednesday! I feel like this week has been like four years long. Does that make any sense? LOL there’s definitely more than one person in my life who tell you that I have a small flare for the exaggerations… but really, this has just been a long ass week.

I do my absolute best to keep it light, happy, and positive, especially on here. But I also want to be real & authentic, and the truth is that life isn’t always a perfectly put together vase of light pink Peonies, YA KNOW.

I’ve talked a lot on here about how I’ve always really struggled with dealing with stress and anxiety in a healthy way, and it’s definitely something I will need to work on every single day, probably for forever. And that’s ok!! Because shit is GOING to happen. That’s life, my friends. The trick is ( I’ve slowly learned ) to accept that fact, and do what you can to help prevent those feelings of stress and anxiety before they completely overwhelm you.

Stress is a nasty, nasty thing. It’s been deemed “the silent killer” for a reason ya’ll. There is study after study and research upon research begging us as humans to really focus on CHILLING OUT. Stress has a way of manifesting itself into very physical forms and causing real damage to our bodies.

You know the common symptoms: headaches/migranes, sweating, shaking, stomach aches, throwing up, tightness in your chest, difficulty breathing, difficulty sleeping, the list can go on and on. If you don’t really, really make a conscious effort to help your body rid itself of those feelings & hormones caused by stress, it can take a huuuuge toll on your overall health, even your longevity of life.

About two years ago I started having super weird back problems that basically just made me feel like I was an 80 year old woman that needed a walker to get around on a daily basis. Another fun fact about me is that I literally hate taking medication. You know when you go to the doctor and they say “ok so take this twice a day and you may feel a little nauseas but other than that you should be good. Only 1 in 5 billion people suffer from these side effects.” I AM ALWAYS THAT 1. And that is not an exaggeration at all. I’m always like “ok well is that side effect death, because if so, give me something else” like kind of a joke but not really LOL. So, when these issues starting coming to the surface ( turns out I have a herniated disc on the very last vertebrae in my spine ) I vowed that I would not take medication for it. So my boyfriend told me about all these different vitamins and supplements that I had never heard of that can help with EVERYTHING. I was amazed.

I mean we all know were supposed to take our vitamins, right? But do we know which vitamins we really need to be taking? The best way to know for sure 100% is to probably get a blood test and find out what you are deficient in. But if you don’t want to do that, take some time and really listen to your body, then do tons of your own research.

I could do a whole other post on the vitamins I take and why….

But, what I really wanted to tell ya’ll about today is MACA.

Ohhhhh, Maca, Maca, Maca.

This brings me back to everything I was saying about taking preventative measures when dealing with stress. Maca is a root in the Raddish family grown in the mountains of Peru. It’s nicknamed the “Peruvian Ginseng”.

There are a few major benefits that I’ll share with ya’ll but the one two I take it for are hormone/ mood balancing, and helping my body with the effects of stress and anxiety.

Maca has these cute little things called Aptogen’s in it. An Aptogen is a non toxic substance that enhances the bodies natural ability to resist environmental stressors, therefore improving our bodies ability to deal with all other kinds of stress, as well. They function in the body by normalizing and balancing the bodies systems, particularly the Endocrine and Immune Systems.

Basically, they can calm down the systems that are stressed or over worked, while at the same time, strengthening the systems that need a little boost. They bring the overactive and under active immune and hormonal systems back into a healthy range. Balancing you out. Ideal, right?

Maca is packed with amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that result in a mood boosting, energy leveling, brain balancing supplement. The Calcium, Phosphorus, and Vitamins B1 & B2 promote muscle growth, and calm the nerves, while controlling anxiety and alleviating mood swings. YES PLEASE.

There are also Alkaloids present in Maca making assimilation of all these nutrients into the cells very easy on your body.

All around win, and those are just two of the benefits.

Maca is also known for:

  • Being an aphrodisiac. Meeooowwww. It can boost the libido and increase stamina.
  • Womens health benefits: alleviate menstrual cramps, body pain, hot flashes, and as we just discussed, mood swings and anxiety.
  • Skin: can help clear acne and blemishes and has been reported to lessen skin sensitivity.

So, wow, that was a lot of information. Try taking it for a few weeks and let me know how you feel!! I take the capsules every morning with some juice ( I am a huge baby and have this weird mental block where I can’t take pills with water LOL ) but it’s also available in powder form where you can add it to smoothies, salad dressings, whatever you feel like.

Whole Foods sells it, I linked a few from Amazon above, buy it wherever or however you like, just be sure it’s non GMO!

Should I do a post on the other vitamins that I take & why?

Thanks sooo much for reading! It means so much to me 🙂

And PS: I’m not a doctor, and I’m sharing what works for me. You should always consult your doctor before trying/taking anything new.

Candles – Go Chemical Free, Ok?

I love candles. Like I am fully obsessed. I don’t believe that it’s a real thing to have “too many” candles, ya know? And everyone in my life knows this because I always get at least 2 candles for every birthday or holiday and I LOVE IT! Seriously, keep em comin, y’all 😉

Unfortunately though…. some candles are made with chemicals that aren’t good for you, or your pets to be breathing in. 2 years ago the first love of my life, Olive ( my tabby cat ), had to be put to sleep. His little lungs shut down and he was not going to get better. It was the absolute hardest, worst thing I have EVER experienced. I cry even thinking about that day. It’s been 2 years and I still don’t know how to put the whole thing into words. Losing a pet is something that’s indescribable. The one thing I do know, though, is the emergency vet asked me a few questions while I was there with him that will stick with me forever. So much so, that I completely changed almost all of the “smelly good” and aerosol hair products that I buy.

She asked me, “Have you switched hairsprays recently?” and “Do you burn a lot of candles that aren’t natural?”

I felt like I got ran over by a train. My entire room and apartment were filled with Bath and Body Works candles that I burned constantly. I began to panic, and she immediately reassured me that the candles were not the CAUSE of his lungs shutting down, but they may have been an instigator. My baby Olive died from either Feline Leukemia or Heart Worm, I didn’t have it in me to put him through more tests that day and I made the choice to be ok with not knowing the exact reason. I made a vow to myself that day that I would stop breathing in those harsh chemicals, no matter how good they smell, and I would never subject another pet of mine to them either.

Wow, sorry for that sad story! I just wanted you guys to know where I’m coming from and what led me to the decision. I am not by any means telling anyone they shouldn’t use Bath and Body Works candles ( they smell amazing, I know! ), or any brand of candle you want for that matter, I am just sharing a personal experience with ya’ll that changed my views on the subject.

Also, if anyone has lost a pet, and needs someone to talk to about it, I AM ALWAYS HERE. It’s one of those things that unless you are speaking to someone that has been through it, they can’t really understand, ya know? Plus, sometimes it’s nice to talk to someone you don’t necessarily know about things like this. Just putting it out there 🙂

ON TO THE CANDLES and things. So, a few days later, I literally threw away every single candle that I owned. I also threw away all my hairsprays and other aerosol products, along with the wallflower plug in’s, also from Bath and Body Works ( again, I am completely not by any means trying to talk shiz about B&BW, I still think a lot of their products are great! I just don’t use them anymore, thats all )  and I didn’t even care. I was on kind of rampage to make some big changes in the chemical free department of my life. I began doing some research to find some candles that were made from natural substances and wouldn’t emit harmful fumes into the air when I burned them.

Coconut Oil, and Soy based candles are the best options if you want to go the natural route.

Ya’ll. There are TONS! It made me so happy!

Most of them are a little bit more on the expensive side, but in my mind it’s more than worth it.  My two favorite brands are:

Voluspa and Craft & Foster.

1.  2.  3.  4.  5.

Voluspa candles are made from Coconut Oil, and Craft & Foster uses soy. Perfect, right?

But also, I know Target has some good soy candle options, and so do places like TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and World Market. You might just have to do a little digging and ingredient reading.

As for hairspray, I  honestly don’t use that much of it in the first place, but Biolage has some good non – aerosol options that are Paraben free and still work wonderfully! So does Pureology. All of their products are now vegan, which is pretty cool.

I just feel like it is SO IMPORTANT to take care of our bodies, and our pets, and our loved ones. They do so much for us, and count on us for everything, ya know? We can still have all of our favorite things, just the chemical free versions. And I feel so great about those choices.

About 6 months after Olive passed away, I adopted a new little baby and named her ELOISE. I adopted her around Christmas time and Eloise At The Plaza was my all time favorite Christmas movie for years, so it was a no brainer.

Now, Eloise, my boyfriend, and our newly adopted puppy live happily ever after in a chemical free apartment that still smells amazing! I still haven’t found a good, natural replacement for the Wallflowers though, so if any of ya’ll know any good brands, please let me know!

What are some of ya’lls favorite natural candle brands? You know I am always down for another candle to buy! Gotta keep the collection growing! LOL

Stocking Stuffers For Her

Hi, hi. So, yesterday we talked about stocking stuffers for the men in your life. Meaning, it’s only natural that today we talk about stocking stuffers for the women in your life, right? And if you are a woman reading this, you can send your bf, husband, dad, Santa, whoever, the link to this post and rest easy knowing that your stocking will be stuffed to perfection!

Since my sisters and brother and I were little my parents have always had a rule that we weren’t allowed to wake them up on Christmas morning to open gifts until the sun was up. When we were younger that drove us INSANE and obviously we could never wait that long! So, they changed the rule up and said that if we woke up super early, we could open the gifts in our stockings to hold us over until it was time to open the gifts under the tree.

Because of this, my stocking gifts are always some of my favorites. I love little tiny thoughtful gifts that are just fun & useful, ya know?

Bliss And Bubbly's Gift Guide - Stocking Stuffers For Her

  1. Bauble Bar Diamond Initial Choker: First of all chokers are SO IN. And us girls love anything monogramed or personalized. So this is the best of both worlds! Plus its small, simple, and sparkly meaning she will be able to wear it every single day and it will compliment whatever outfit she has on. I definitely asked Santa for this one ;).
  2. Origins Sensory Therapy: This stuff is PURE MAGIC. I bought it for my mom a few years ago to help with her head & neck tension, used hers a few times, and became addicted. Anything you purchase from Origins is a safe bet, but this particular product will be so thoughtful and sweet because it’s something she will be able to use to make her feel better any time of day. You put a dab of it on your temples, the base of your neck, and on your ear lobes and literally feel the tension melt away. Soooo ideal.
  3. Cozy Faux Fur Mittens: Every girl loves anything and everything soft, particularly if it’s faux fur soft. When it’s freezing outside, all we want is to feel comfortable, but not totally ruin our outfits. If the woman in your life is anything like me aka her hands always are always freezing cold, then this is a perfect stocking stuffer to help her feel cozy and fabulous this winter.
  4. Seaweed Bath Co. Products: I discovered this brand last summer and have been 23985% addicted ever since. I’ve tried almost everything they sell and it’s all AMAZING. The whole seaweed detox bath is one of the most relaxing things on the planet. Treat the woman in your life to a relaxing spa night at home with a delicious smelling bath and a glass of champagne. She will fall in love with you even more than she already has!
  5. A Starbucks Giftcard: Because Duh. Does this really need an explanation? I’m going to go with a no.
  6. Cheeky Office Supplies: This brand is so cute and totally on brand for the blogger, the college girl, or the working girl in your life who wants to be chic & organized. They have some really great things to close from. The pens and the planners are my personal faves.

Happy shopping, ya’ll!

Thank you so much for reading!

Stocking Stuffers For The Men In Your Life

Christmas is getting soooo close you guys!! I’m just slightly excited. I started wrapping my presents and putting them under our tree and in our stockings last night and it made me so happy. Is it totally crazy that I am already thinking about how sad it’s going to be after NYE when I have to take down all the Christmas decorations, and Christmas hasn’t even passed yet….? LOL anyways, I know I can’t be the only one who has the hardest time finding stocking stuffers for the men in my life. Finding gifts for them in general is hard enough, but stocking stuffers? I mean, with us girls throw some lotion and a Starbucks gift card in there and we’re happy, but the guys are a whole different story.

SO, I wanted to share some of my favorite things I’ve found this year as super fun stocking stuffer ideas for my bf. And maybe he will just forget about this post by the time he opens his stocking…..

Stocking Stuffers For The Men In Your Life With Bliss And Bubbly

  1. Cheeky Keychain: I found this on Easy and started laughing out loud because I couldn’t believe how perfect it was for my boyfriend. This is probably TMI but thats ok. I’m sure if your boyfriend has a good sense of humor ( and also loves you & your boobs ) he will find this just as hilarious as my boyfriend is going to.
  2. Badger Beard Wax: My boyfriend hasn’t used this before but he’s addicted to the oil ( number 3 ) so I figure he will love this as well. This product is all natural and filled with yummy essential oils so it’s great for your guys skin, and will tame all those little stray fly away hairs that pop out of his beard.
  3. Tie & Belt Hanger: This is not something really cute or fun but it’s practical, and most men are all about practical, am I right? This is perfect to keep his ties and belts hung up, and safe in one place. This is actually a gift for you and for him, especially if you live together and share a closet. Just think how much less clutter there will be in there with all those ties & belts neatly hung in one place. You’re welcome ;).
  4. Badger Beard Oil: I’ve talked about this product before before my boyfriend and I are equally OBSESSED with it. I randomly bought it for him last year because I was  hoping it would help soften his beard up and keep it from scratching my face. I was right! It’s amazing. It’s all natural which is very important to him & I and it smells heavenly. It’s like that manly candle smell you always want, ya know? But it’s on your boyfriends face! You’ll want to give him a million kisses, and he will be so happy to have a soft, healthy beard!
  5. Comfy Cotton T Shirts: Why is it that men never buy things like this for themselves? I swear, they will wear the same 4 t shirts they’ve had since they were 20 years old and be perfectly fine with it. I think it’s so nice to get them things like this, especially soft and comfortable ones, because we know how much they will appreciate it every time they go to put one on and will secretly be so happy that they have a nice, new shirt to wear, instead of the old one.

What are ya’lls favorite stocking stuffer ideas for the men in your lives? I’m sure we could all use all the help we can get, right ladies?!

Thank you so much for reading!

Let’s Catch Up? Maui Recap

Hello, hello, hellllooo!

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

I am back from MAUI, Hawaii where I got to stand next to my best friend and watch her marry her best friend. I am about to cry again just thinking back to how magical and perfect the whole thing was.

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

I had never been to Hawaii before so when she told me she wanted a Maui wedding last year I couldn’t wait. Getting to spend a week there celebrating the love of two of my very best friends is the best possible reason for a first visit I can think of!

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

Literally every where you look doesn’t even look real. I don’t know another way to describe it. It’s all so gorgeous. If you’ve been, you know exactly what I am talking about. Like, everything looks like a picture. When we were taking pictures at the wedding everyone was like “The background looks fake, it’s so perfect it doesn’t even look real!”

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

I am still not over it.

The wedding was held at the Olowalu Plantation House. If you have even a little inkling of a thought of maybe having a destination wedding and don’t want to leave the country… THIS IS THE PLACE TO HAVE IT. I cannot even express in words how beyond perfect thing wedding venue is.

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

We stayed at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa and the Hyatt Regency at Maui which were equally as beautiful as the wedding venue. With such a huge group ( between the bridesmaids, groomsmen and family members from both sides ) both hotels were extremely accommodating. There were so many pools ( with adult & kid friendly watersides! ) with cabanas and swim up bars it was hard to chose where we wanted to lay out! Not to mention being able to literally walk onto the beach from the hotel….

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

Plus there was a rainbow or a double rainbow almost every single day.

I’m a bit terrified of the ocean…( sharks ) mostly because I’ve never been able to see my feet once I’m in there! The unknown is not something I love. BUT the ocean in Maui is clear as can be, and WARM. I actually swam in the ocean! Haven’t been so proud of myself in a long time LOL.

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

There is so many choices of fresh amazing fruit and fish to eat. Banana & coconut EVERYTHING. I was in heaven.

Basically, it was a dream come true. Definitely the best wedding I’ll ever be in/attend ( probably including my own one day… LOL ) and if you haven’t been to Maui before, spend the money and just DO IT. You will not regret it for one single second, I can promise you that much.

MAUI RECAP - My best friends wedding

Off to finish up some of my beach reads & sip on some peppermint tea!

Does anyone have any Maui must haves or must dos that I missed??

xx, Madison.

My Newest Skincare Obsession: JADE ROLLING

I am ALL ABOUT prevention. I believe your 20’s is the time to do whatever you want, take chances & risks, make amazing memories, and start taking pristine care of your skin. I am constantly researching the newest trends in skincare routines ( especially in Korea…. they know what’s up ) and testing different products to see what works best for me. I try to always find a natural route to take though, which usually means the less products, the better ( unless they are plant based and organic ) which is why I couldn’t wait to try JADE ROLLING.

Besides the fact that Jade is a ridiculously beautiful stone, SURPRISE, rolling it on your neck & face has tons of benefits for your health & beauty.

  • Eliminates toxins.
  • Reduces redness & puffiness.
  • Literally calms you down ( or it has that effect on me anyways… ).
  • Lymphatic drainage.
  • Improves skins elasticity.
  • Tightens pores.
  • Reduces under eye circles.

It is incredibly easy to use, and even easier to add to your daily skincare routine, especially because you’ll start to see results almost immediately. The stone stays cool to the touch, even if it’s kept at room temperature ( some people like to keep it in the fridge for an extra chilly boost ), so if you wake up with any inflammation this is a great remedy.

I personally like to do it at night since, like I mentioned before, it has a really calming effect on  me. After cleansing, applying my chia seed serum, rose hip oil & moisturizer, I get to rolling!

How To:

Start at the collar bone and end at the forehead, always rolling UP.

Literally that easy.

Think: “I’m lifting the wrinkles, impurities, and puffiness right off of my face!”

I ordered mine off of Amazon ( this one ) a few weeks ago and very, very quickly became OBSESSED. It comes with a handy dandy little booklet with pictures showing exactly where to roll. I do it every single night. Like, I get legitimately excited to wash my face and use my Jade

Jade rolling at night, ice rolling in the morning, yes please!

If anyone adds it to their routine, share your results!!

Boho Braids – Perfect Summer Syle

Summer and braids are just kind of one in the same, don’t you agree? I know I can’t be the only one completely obsessed with braiding my hair. Its so easy, and can completely dress up or dress down any outfit. Especially here in Texas with it getting to be over 100 degrees along with humidity, a cute & easy style, that keeps the hair out of your face is a MUST. That means BOHO BRAIDS!

Easy Boho Braids with Bliss and Bubbly -

This style can be done on short or long hair, and is extremely easy. All you need is some bobby pins, and some clear tiny hair ties.

Step One:

On one side of your head, complete two semi loose braids. Have one start higher towards your scalp, the other a little farther down. Only braid about halfway down, don’t go all the way to the ends. Once you tie your braid, pull the loops out a little bit to add some volume to the braid.

Easy Boho Braids with Bliss and Bubbly -

Step Two:

Pull back the hair around your crown, and pin with bobby pins. This will take some weight off trying to pin it all up along with the braids.

Easy Boho Braids with Bliss and Bubbly -

Step Three:

On the other side, complete just one loose braid, and pull apart like you did in step one, tying it tight at the end.

Easy Boho Braids with Bliss and Bubbly -

Step Three:

Pull all three of your braids back to the middle of your head, and pin right along the crown where you already began pinning your loose, unbraided hair.

Easy Boho Braids with Bliss and Bubbly -

I overlapped them to add more dimension and volume. SO EASY AND SO CUTE RIGHT?

This literally takes ten minutes and looks like you tried super hard. I don’t about y’all but that is my absolute favorite kind of hairstyle.

Try it out & let me know how it goes! What’s your go – to easy hair style for summer?

Road Tripping With My Sister

Phew! For the last seven days I have been on a half – way – across – the – country – road – tip with my sister from NYC ( where she goes to school ) back to Texas. It was A TOTAL BLAST. I think everyone should go on a few road trips a year ( long or short ) with someone they love. It’s perfect to spend uninterrupted time together, and see cities you’ve never been to!

Hardy Sister Road Trip

So, we left from NYC, where I FINALLY got to take a picture with the Madison Ave sign ( that has literally been a dream of mine since I found out there was a street with my name that was just filled with amazing designers…. ). We strolled through central park, and the flowers were all blooming and smelled amazing and were stunning. Then we saw Times Square because I just haaaad to have a Manhattan street hot dog & soft pretzel ( they did not disappoint ) and it reminded me of Vegas, but not as drunk ( lol ) and then we went to Chinatown and had the absolute greatest dumplings I have ever had in my entire life. I mean seriously, I am going to dream about those little things.

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Hardy Sister Road TripHardy Sister Road TripHardy Sister Road Trip

And then we headed to Virginia Beach. Holy guacamole, this place is B E A U T I F U L. I highly, highly recommend going there, either with friends, or for a romantic getaway with your love, because let me tell you, this beach is insane. I didn’t want to leave. I recommend eating at Chick’s Oyster Bar, and getting oysters, obviously. If you are not completely obsessed with oysters like I am, we also tried the shrimp cocktail and fried calamari which were to die for.

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Then we headed to Nashville. We ended up spending two days here because it’s such a fun, incredible town! There are endless amounts of things to do. My sister and I wanted to just be total tourists in every place we went and go major souvenir shopping, which was awesome. But we also asked everyone we met for their food recommendations so we could eat like locals. We had insanely good BBQ at The Peg Leg Porker, and some pretty fab brunch at this cute little place called Germantown Cafe. Of course, Broadway Street is where all the “honky tonk” bars are at, and it’s super fun to go hop from place to place because there are different kinds of live music being every single place you go. We went from country, to rock, to 80’s in like thirty minutes and it was awesome. But Nashville has this really cool way of being like huge but also really small. You can drive for five minutes and be out in the calm country filled with adorable Farmer’s Markets and antique shops ( I could have spent the whole two days just in those antique shops oh my god they were amazing ).

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Next up was New Orleans. Okaaaay so, a bunch of people had warned me that Bourbon Street smells like pee ( let me warn you, they are completely correct, it was absolutely disgusting ) but we wanted to experience it for ourselves. Aaaand, once was enough for my lifetime. By all means, go find out for yourself, but believe people when they tell you it’s gross ( funny, but totally not funny at the same time ) BUT ANYWAYS. There are some pretty fantastic restaurants and super classy bars in New Orleans as well. We had happy hour at this cute place called Luke. .75 CENT OYSTERS PEOPLE. And half off alllll wine, and most importantly, CHAMPAGNE. I was in heaven. I also recommend the crawfish bisque. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Hardy Sister Road Trip

Now we’re back in Texas with the whole fam together and it feels so good!

Where is the best place you’ve gone on a road trip? Any fab food recommendations?

Definitely Do Not De Claw

Here’s the deal, before I got Eloise, I had a little orange tabby Prince of a kitty named Olive. He was my first pet while living on my own in college and my first love. He passed away last year because of a very freak lung problem and I’m not sure if I will ever recover from that loss (Eloise helps immensely, obviously). When I rescued him, I was renting an apartment with three other girls and I decided (before I did any real research of my own) to get him de-clawed. I think that I kind of justified it to myself by saying that he was always going to be an inside cat, so he didn’t reallllly need them, right? Well, I was wrong, and I know that now, which I guess is the important thing here.

When I rescued Eloise, one of the many things I promised myself I would do differently, was absolutely not getting her de-clawed. Here are the facts and many reasons why anyone who has recently adopted a kitten, or is thinking about it should join me in the movement to let the kitties keep their claws:

Eloise's Paws

  • During the procedure, in order to get the entire claw removed, and avoid the claw trying to grow back, they must remove a piece of the actual toe bone. Comparing that to humans would be like cutting the tip of your finger off.
  • Cats use their claws for playing, exercising, hunting, climbing and marking their territory.
  • De-clawing effects their balance (one of the many amazingly beautiful things about cats is their natural, impressive balance!)
  • It causes them to feel defenseless, which in turn, can cause them to obtain more behavioral problems such as nervous/defensive biting, and skittishness.

If those aren’t enough for you, here is a quote from an expert, Dr. Nicholas Dodman from his book The Cat Who Cried For Help.

“Declawing involves more than simply trimming a cat’s nails to the quick; it actually involves amputation of the tips of the digits, bones and all. The inhumanity of the procedure is clearly demonstrated by the nature of cats’ recovery from anesthesia following the surgery. Unlike routine recoveries, including recovery from neutering surgeries, which are fairly peaceful, declawing surgery results in cats bouncing off the walls of the recovery cage because of excruciating pain. Cats that are more stoic huddle in the corner of the recovery cage, immobilized in a state of helplessness, presumably by the overwhelming pain. Declawing fits the dictionary definition of mutilation to a tee. Words such as deformdisfiguredisjoint, and dismember all apply to this surgery. Partial digital amputation is so horrible that it has been employed for torture of prisoners of war, and in veterinary medicine, the clinical procedure servesas a model of severe pain for testing the efficacy of analgesic drugs. Even though analgesic drugs can be used postoperatively, they rarely are, and their effects are incomplete and transient anyway, so sooner or later the pain will emerge.

Alright, so with that picture in mind, here is a list of some fabulous alternatives to de-clawing!

  • Play with your cat on the regular. This not only builds your relationship, but it helps your cat realize when it’s time to use their claws (playing and attacking toys) and when it’s not.
  • Trim their nails! Just be careful not to cut them too short, avoid the quick (the darker part toward the top).
  • Invest in a good scratching post or cat tree, and teach them how to use it. My parents got Eloise one for Christmas and let me tell you, she is absolutely obsessed with climbing and playing all over that thing and it’s the cutest thing ever.
  • Get nail “covers” from almost any pet store. Bonus, they have some super fab colors.
  • Use a squirt bottle. This is extremely effective because cats generally aren’t the biggest fans of water, and they will learn fairly quickly what places in the house they cannot use their claws.
  • Research some natural “no scratch” sprays that will be safe for them, and safe for your furniture. Pet’s Mart has a fairly large selection.

What I hope to achieve with this post, is to at least get a few people out there to change their stance on this subject and let their kitties keep their claws! This is important, guys.

Little Miss Eloise

Smiling Eloise

I would like to take the great pleasure in introducing everyone to my perfect, snuggly, little fur baby, Eloise. Yes, to answer your first burning question, I sure did name her after the greatest Christmas movie ever, Eloise At The Plaza.

Me and Eloise

She enjoys my big fur blanket, dried wild caught salmon kitty treats, kisses on her perfect little pink nose, and sitting on my lap any time I sit down.

Eloise and Ariel Shirt

I adore her for not only being my numero uno cuddle buddy, but also because her unconditional love has helped get me through a completely broken heart. I am 100% crazy for my cat, and I am not even a tinsy bit ashamed of that!
